Unipress Turnovské tiskárny is a plant, the tradition of which stretches to the middle of the 19th century, when a printing company was established in Turnov. Originally, it concerned a lithographic production, later on book printing, nowadays offset print. At first, the production was focused on printed matters, business books, posters. Later on, on printing wall and school maps. An important progress came with the implementation of the production of colour postcards, for which the Turnov printing company was awarded with a golden medal in Paris.
In 1907, one printing company in Turnov was divided in two. Between the world wars, books are printed in Turnov for a prominent Prague publisher Otto a spol., as well as newspapers and magazines for the region. The polygraphic production in Turnov obtained a very good reputation and orders for the production of bibliographic publications processed by the leading Czech graphic artists headed there. They were also awarded in the international exhibition in Florence with a diploma of honour. Excellent graphic artist Karel Vik and lettering artist and typographer Oldřich Menhart became important fellow-workers of the printers in Turnov.
After the Second World War, both printing companies in Turnov merged into one plant again and a team of excellent workers enthusiastic to achieve quality printing was formed here. The plant co-operates with the Prague publishing house Febia, which deals with exporting books abroad. In the World Exposition in Brussels, this publishing house wins the Great Award for the 25 exhibited books. Altogether twelve of those books were printed in Turnov. In 1954, the printing company is awarded by the President of our republic with the National Award for Extraordinary Achievements and Efforts for Quality of Polygraphic Production.
A decision was taken about the construction of a new plant and the production in the new plant was started in 1961. In 1964, printing of publications ceased in Turnov and the plant was oriented on the promotion of the Czechoslovak products aboard. The plant becomes the preferential printing company that ensures printing for the most prominent plants of foreign trade. In 1968, with their participation, it also realized an unparalleled investment and purchased nine flatbed presses Heidelberg and out-of-machine preparation FAG at the same time, whereby it promoted the then book printing production to the highest level. The range of production of the plant did not change for over 20 years.
After the revolution in 1989, the foreign trade plants ceased to exist. The printing company started a gradual reconstruction to the offset technology. The composition of clients started to change and since 1. 1. 1993, the plant has been in private hands as the firm Unipress spol. s r. o. purchased it from the state
